Part 1 : British Railways 1961 - 1965
Part 2 : British Railways 1966 - 1968
Part 3 : Britain post 1968, France, Spain & Turkey
There are now 3 separate shows, divided as described above. The first all in colour illustrates
his more conventional pictures from all around the British Isles including a handful in Northern
Ireland in the early years from 1961 to the end of 1965 approximately. This show has a full
commentary generally describing each slide in turn
The second is almost all colour but does include the most dramatic image from his black & white
work, the medium in which he first made his name as a railway photographer through pictures
published in magazines in the 1960s. The shot was taken in backlit sunny conditions in February 1967
of former LMS Jubilee class 4-6-0 number 45562 'Alberta' heading a northbound railtour through the
Lune Gorge working hard over Dillicar troughs picking up water that is overflowing the tender. This
was taken with a 135mm telephoto lens to set the train back into the landscape. This shot was typical of
the high impact photography using longer focus lenses in which Paul Riley was an early pioneer.
In this show individual picture details are provided using captions whilst the accompanying soundtrack
includes a tribute to the photographer and some biographical notes that can both be read in the
Photographers section of this website.
The third and final show covers aspects of the preservation scene in the UK up to the time of his death and pictures taken on Paul's trips abroad to France, Spain & Turkey. This includes a few black & white pictures taken on trips to France & Spain in 1967 & 1966 respectively that were not recorded in colour with everything else in colour. There is a full commentary accompanying this show like the first.
