The Ottoman Railway Company was formed in 1856 to build a line between Smyrna (now Izmir) & Aidin (Aydin) and when the first section to Seydiköy was opened on 30th October 1858, it was the first railway in the Ottoman Empire. This was gradually extended until it reached Eğridir in 1912. The major features from a photographic viewpoint were the climb through the suburbs from Izmir Alsancak station, the steep climb from Selçuk to Çamlik, to a lesser extent the climb to Çamlik from the east, and what became the branch system to Eğridir from Karakuyu.
